‘Re-entry’can be pretty crapy. everyone deals with it differently though, so it is difficult to know what to expect. Enjoy your last couple of weeks - I always find it hard to balance getting ready to leave and not mentally leaving before I’ve actually gone. Both extremes are difficult.

I am a Viet Nam SALTer from last year (from Winnipeg), and I have been annonymously perusing your blog/ website for the last few months. Of all the things you have posted, this video made me miss Viet Nam the most. Watching the traffic from Highland Cafe in the Old Quarter or just being a part of the giant chaotic, organized mess, was always thrilling.

This posed an ethical dilemma for me: I wanted photographs of the monks, but I did not want to play the role of the culturally insensitive, obnoxious tourist with a camera. A telephoto lens might have helped. In the end, I cowardly shot them from behind.

SHOOTING FROM BEHIND
Far from cowardly, your decision to photograph monks from behind was the right thing to do. I have often struggled with this same issue in Cambodia, while travelling in the provinces, meeting artisans and their families… So many memories and eye-candy sights that I wanted to remember with photos. Where do I draw the line? As a “traveller in a foriegn land” am I simply granted the right to photograph anything? Even asking “Can I take your picture?” with my white-priviledge, I risk objectifying someone.

I rode an elephant in Zambia - it was a much nicer experience than the one you had as they treat the animals very well, but like you I did it so I could say I rode an elephant:)

Languages are awesome! I sometimes think that the more languages a person learns, the more they are able to express their ideas in words. Each language covers the “holes” left in another language. Learn enough languages and you’ll cover most of the holes.
